TO EFFECTIVELY ASSIST STUDENTS, AVOID COUNSELLING MISTAKES

Before getting into to know the mistakes made by the teachers or counselors while counselling students and ways to effectively assist students, let’s know what is student counselling and what happens in student counselling. To Effectively Assist Students Avoid Counselling Mistakes

Counselling Services include psychological, mental, or emotional advice, as well as education and career counselling. Students should be encouraged to consider their personal interests, values, competencies, and qualities.

DON’TS while counselling your student:

  1. Sharing Of Student Information

You cannot give sensitive information to the wrong person as a qualified school counsellor, nor can you release data about a student without the parent’s approval. You may share information to the following parties without the express consent of the parents or guardians:

  • Other schools to which the student will be transferring
  • Officers of the school system who have a real interest in education
  • Defined officials for auditing or evaluating
  • Appropriate parties in connection with a student’s financial support 
  • Establishments undertaking firm studies for or on behalf of the school to comply with a judicial or legally issued order
  • In the event of a health and safety crisis, the appropriate officials must be contacted.
  1. Exploitation 

As a school counsellor, you have the authority to report when you – 

  • Have a complete duty to report
  • Have the obligation to report within 48 hours.
  • As good faith reporting is expected, if they are disappeared.
  • Understand that there is no statute of limitations on reporting child abuse.

Also, don’t be surprised if schoolchildren approach you with a query regarding alcohol or other substances. Schools often put in place various programs to deal with substance misuse, but it is your responsibility to ensure that students obey this command.

  1.  Lack of empathy

It’s vital to be honest and open with a therapist, but that can be difficult if they don’t demonstrate empathy. 

A competent therapist should be empathetic and understanding in order to better connect, make one feel at ease, provide with appropriate counsel, and let know that they’re in a safe place.

  1. Suicidal Thoughts

Bullying is one of the most common issues that counsellors encounter, but suicidal threats can be the most disturbing. Various pupils will claim that they had no intention of injuring themselves, even if they did, because they are humiliated or embarrassed. Overlooking this issue is another mistake that counsellors make.

Suicidal pressure should not be overlooked or taken lightly. To safeguard the student’s safety, school counselors must set accurate treatment goals and a connection of all possible resources.

  1. Be Critical or Judgemental

It is a therapist’s role to look at a situation objectively, without their personal biases and beliefs. When pupils feel scrutinized, they are less likely to open up and growth is hampered. No one should have to go through this, especially from someone whose job it is to assist.

Effective counselling entails a trained counsellor not making the mistake of getting in too quickly. Instead, aim to form a relationship early on by giving yourself enough time to establish trust.
